Why should I consider counseling?
Counseling provides support during times of difficulty and/or uncertainty. It provides the guidance of a trained and educated professional who will focus on solely on you. Your counselor will utilize therapeutic techniques gained from a vast array of education, skills, and experiences. Together you will work to resolve issues, facilitate growth through personal development, and find true happiness. Counseling is also confidential (with a few exceptions, see below).
What does confidential mean?
All licensed clinicians (counselors, therapists, psychologists, etc.) are required to keep your information confidential. This means that what you share in counseling cannot be shared with anyone else. There are a few exceptions to this rule: Threatening suicide or homicide, the need to advocate for one who cannot protect him or herself (child, disabled, elderly person), and/or court proceedings where your counselor is subpoenaed.
What types of issues require counseling?
Many people struggle with personal, professional, or relational issues at various points in their lives. Common stressors in life that may cause distress include issues at work, a divorce or break up, the loss of a job or a loved one, or just attempting to “find oneself”. Depending on various factors, these transitions may cause us minimal or great difficulty. Facing concerns head on is the fastest, most efficient way to resolve them.
How long is counseling required?
You will work closely with your counselor to determine what is best for you. The recommended duration of treatment varies with each person and level of resiliency. An average number is approximately 8-12 sessions meeting weekly. Individual sessions are generally 45-50 minutes in length.
Do I need medication?
Medication is not prescribed through this office. Documentation can be provided to your physician to assist with prescription requests after a release of information is signed.
Why shouldn’t I just take medication?
Medication alone cannot solve all issues. What medication does is treat the symptoms. Our work together is designed to explore the root of the issue, dig deep into your behavior and teach strategies that can help you accomplish your personal and/or relational goals. Medication can be effective and is sometimes needed in conjunction with therapy.
What if I am uncertain about counseling?
Uncertainty is not uncommon. Change is often uncomfortable. Please contact us to arrange a consultation appointment. We are happy to meet with you and answer any questions you may have.
